ALL CONTRACTORS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL

Hiring a contractor is not an easy task. You’ve all heard the stories...they don’t show up, they don’t return calls, they say they can do the work but end up letting you down...the list goes on and on.

There are 3 basic fears all homeowners have in selecting a contractor. They are:
1. Will they do the job I want done?
2. Will they do my job on time?
3. Will they do my job at a fair price?

Get to know the contractor before you hire him or her. Contact the Better Business Bureau. Contact your local contractors board. Ask you contractor for completed projects that you can look at.

Check references. Ask homeowners of completed projects if their contractor started their project on time and did they complete on time. If not, then ask why not. Did the project change from the start or were there weather delays.

Ask homeowners of completed projects if their contractor was the low bid and were there lots of unexpected change orders.

Don't automatically choose the lowest bidder.

WHERE ARE THE GOOD CONTRACTORS HIDING?

You can find them in the Yellow Pages, local papers or local online services such as “Craigslist” with no credible way, desire or need to judge the contractors on their pages. Hence, they are of little value except to help you develop a list. To make finding a contractor worst, most good contractors don’t advertise. They rely on word of mouth from previous customers.
